Bio

Kolbe is an active trombonist and performing artist based in Eastern Iowa, recognized for his versatility across both the classical and jazz genres. He serves as Assistant Director and Principal Trombonist of the nationally acclaimed King's Brass under the direction of Tim Zimmerman.

 

A recent graduate of University of Iowa, Kolbe earned a Bachelor of Music in Trombone Performance alongside a Bachelor of Business Administration in Accounting. He has performed with a wide range of ensembles, including Jim McDonough and his Orchestra, Blake Shaw’s Big(ish) Band, and the Cedar Rapids Municipal Band, among others. He has appeared with the Vivian Shanley Quartet and the Joey Schnoebelen Quintet, both of which have been featured on KCCK-FM. Lastly, he currently serves as Principal Trombonist of the Iowa Brass Band.

 

Kolbe’s artistry has been recognized through numerous competitive and selective opportunities. He was chosen to attend the prestigious Jazz Aspen Snowmass Academy, led by the Frost School of Music under the direction of Christian McBride. Kolbe also competed as a semifinalist in both the solo and excerpt competitions at the Southeast Trombone Symposium, and was selected into both the Jazz Band of America and the Honor Band of America.

 

As a chamber musician, he advanced to the semifinals of the Thailand International Trombone Festival Ensemble Division with the West Slides Quartet and earned second alternate in the International Trombone Association’s 2024 Trombone Quartet Competition with the Clinton Street Quartet.
